Fire and Rain

“There are different wells within your heart.
Some fill with each good rain,
Others are far too deep for that.”

Listening to the rain falling all day, outside my window, has been cleansing and thought provoking.

Since I live in Southern California, we have recently experienced a series of wildfires that have been the worst in the state’s history. Many have been left homeless by the devastation. And yet, within this experience, there have been multitude upon multitude of miracles.

One such miracle is how this catastrophic event has become a very leveling experience, overall.

In times of strife, we realize we’re all “equals” when the chips are down, so to speak, and that is one of the finest moments of being a human being upon this planet. However, this is the way our lives were always intended to be…

In time, I pray this way of interacting becomes the new normal. Being: when I look into your eyes, I see myself. When you need help, my hand is upon yours without hesitation to help you out. When you are in need, you are not a stranger, but a friend.

Today, I was drawn to a poem by Hafiz that I’ve always treasured. I once read it as a rather coy love poem, but today I read it through fresh eyes. Today, I understood it at a deeper level. And so, here it is for you to enjoy and relate to at whichever level you choose to.

There are different wells within your heart.
Some fill with each good rain,
Others are far too deep for that.

In one well
You have just a few precious cups of water,
That “love” is literally something of yourself,
It can grow as slow as a diamond
If it is lost.

Your love
Should never be offered to the mouth of a
Stranger,
Only to someone
Who has the valor and daring
To cut pieces of their soul off with a knife
Then weave them into a blanket
To protect you.

There are different wells within us.
Some fill with each good rain,
Others are far, far too deep
For that.”

~ HAFIZ, “The Divan”

And along with pondering and reading poetry, I also created a playlist:

“Fire & Rain” if you’re in the mood to be serenaded.
