Love sometimes wants to do us a great favor: hold us upside down and shake all the nonsense out.
Beautiful Reader ~
Tonight, I sit by the fire with Hafiz. Have you met him? I’m pretty sure I danced on tables with this mystical Sufi in a very distant past. It was not a sordid past, either. It was great fun. How could it not be?
I turn to him again and again for guidance, for solace and for frivolity. He always provides what I am seeking with vivid imagery. Hafiz’s poetry can capture sorrow in a way that takes my breath away and bring smiles to my face like no other poet.
So on this brisk January night, as I sit in the glow of the fireplace, I am contemplating three things: Love, Death , & Joy.
The saboteurs of joy invaded my day. Today, death has touched someone I love dearly. And in an altogether separate matter, love has stretched my heart with emotions to the point of pain. When you feel as though your heart is breaking, try to remember your heart is actually growing. Your heart experiences growing pains so it can hold more love. And with that, here is a very small sampling of the delightful wisdom of Hafiz. All these translated selections by Daniel Ladinsky, come from the book ,”I Heard God Laughing: Poems of Hope and Joy”
With So Much Love ~ Angela xoxox
It Felt Love
Did the rose
Ever open its heart
And give this world
It felt the encouragement of light
We all remain
TRIPPING OVER JOY
What is the difference
Between your experience of Existence
And that of a saint?
The saint knows
That the spiritual path
Is a sublime chess game with God
And that the Beloved
Has just made such a Fantastic Move
That the saint is now continually
Tripping over Joy
And bursting out in Laughter
And saying, “I Surrender!”
Whereas, my dear,
I am afraid you still think
You have a thousand serious moves.
You Better Start Kissing Me
Your begging bowls at God’s door
For I have heard the Beloved
Prefers sweet threatening shouts,
Something on the order of:
My heart is a raging volcano
of love for you!
You better start kissing me –
I Am So Glad
Start seeing everything as God,
But keep it a secret.
Become like a man who is awestruck
Listening to a Golden Nightingale sing in a beautiful foreign language
While God invisibly nests
Upon its tongue.
Who can you tell in this world that when a dog runs up to you
Wagging its ecstatic tail,
You lean down and whisper in its ear,
I am so glad YOU are happy to see me.
I am so glad,
So very glad You have come.”
THE GREAT SECRET
God was full of Wine last night, So full of wine
That He let a great secret slip.
There is no man on earth
Who needs a pardon from Me –
For there is really no such thing,
No such thing
That Beloved has gone completely Wild-He has poured Himself into me!
I am Blissful and Drunk and Overflowing.
Draw life from my Sweet Body,
Dear wayfaring souls,
Come drink your fill of liquid rubies,
For God has made my heart
An Eternal Fountain!
